I am currently taking a break from leading workshops as I prepare to welcome the birth of my son in the Spring of 2010. I do plan to continue my work as a writing mentor, coach, and editor in the late summer or fall, so please visit the 'mentoring' link and contact me if you'd like more information.

Past topics have included: Discovering Your Story: A Course in Memoir Writing, Write Now: Exploring Creative Nonfiction, Writing the Spiritual, Writing Compassion, Writing and Collage, and more. Please contact me if you are interested in a writing workshop tailored to your community's interests and needs.

FALL 2009

Writing the Spiritual: An Exploration of Memoir and Free-writing

Many of us consider ourselves to be spiritual, yet what do we mean by this word? Spiritual experiences and beliefs are amongst the most difficult subjects to convey through words—especially in prose. In this class we will explore themes such as roots, ritual, impermanence, and compassion through a series of free-writing exercises. Students will be encouraged to read aloud from their exercises in a supportive environment. We will also read from essays/memoirs that explore spiritual themes, and discuss how to write vividly and honestly.

Writing, Fear, and Self-censorship

All of us know fear. As writers, some of our fears may include fear of revealing vulnerable or ugly truths, fear of offending others, or fear that our writing is banal and worthless. Fear can keep us from writing about the very subjects we most need to write about, or in the worst case, it can keep us from writing at all.  In this class, we will examine the role that fear plays in our lives through a series of writing exercises and in-class discussion. We will look at excerpts from David Bayles and Ted Orland’s Art and Fear, as well as quotes from writers who have contemplated their own relationship to fear—and what it takes to overcome it. Maximum Enrollment: 15

When: Saturday, July 11; 1-5 p.m.

Where: The Richard Hugo House on Capitol Hill

Cost: $95 general/$85.50  members

To register go to: www.hugohouse.org or call: (206) 322-7030
